But is that all? Let’s see. One is, has it was said, an athletic, charming men, that happened to be a scientist. The other is a doctor, not athletic, not very charming. Is actually rude, selfish and likes nothing better than to have his way. MacGyver had is adventures in the middle of the desert, where airplanes exploded and wars were going on. House stays locked in is apartment most of the time, some of those times he should be at work.
But they’ve have more in common that one realises. Is not fair to criticise a tv series that is not over yet. It still runs, so changes are a possibility that may or not improve the product. But I make my judging through these first four seasons. Here it goes:
Dr. House is essentially that: The doctor House. The rest of the cast is nothing. They personal lives are almost inexistent. They’re not developed. Lets take has an example, Dr. House’s friend, Dr. Wilson (name inspired no doubt, in the most famous secondary character in the world, hum function was to listen to doctor Holmes, Sherlock Holmes). He’s also a doctor that happens to be divorced a certain number of times that we don’t even know. I think that, other than to be involved with House, none of Wilson’s ex or currant wifes had a part on the show. The other characters are very shallow too. They come across has dispensable in the story. Just take House out of the picture and see what you stay up with. The other criticism I throw into the sitcom is the poor credibility I see in the hospital environment. Apart from going on the corridors showing themselves in white gowns and stethoscopes hugging in by the neck, speaking in doctor’s terms, sometimes in the company of House, there’s nothing interesting going on. Just others strolling around. And I believe this is done only because if they made every scene inside the five doctor’s office, it would look bad. Many times it makes me laugh. Especially in the scenes where we see the patients family reactions.
If nothing else appeals to your attention, center yourselves in that. For people who very suddenly see they love ones (a daughter/sun/father/mother/uncle/etc) in life or death situation, their reaction is almost every time very peacefully. They’re told that only a miracle can save they sun, and in three seconds they are resign. It sounds silly! Actually, is not credible.
Of course, another way to pass that hospital environment feeling to the viewer is to show all the hospital paraphernalia on use. The exams a patient has to make, the needles injections, the blood etc. The patient always, but always has an unexpected crises after having had a normal conversation with the doctor that exams him and says he’s much better.
This tv sitcom makes me laugh. Many times! Maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m already watching this show 10 years from now. And just like MacGyver, I laugh of the bad scenes that look fake but seemed ok back in the 80´s.
I don’t negative criticize everything in Dr. House. I give a positive reinforcement to the character itself, because it exemplifies a lot of what we have today. People are not that active has MacGyver anymore. Maybe they never were. This days, people seem to ambition nothing more that a live of comfort. Like the car parking space really near to the building entrance, or even on the sidewalk so they can keep a closer look from the sleeping room window. Only extremely poor and old people use the public bus. No one walks to work anymore. People can be in debt more that what they cope with, but no luxury is putted aside. So House exemplifies something that this modern society created. Selfish people that have trouble relating with others. Also, House likes to make a point by using others as there on guineapigs.
Another positive thing about this series is the open titles. The graphic design is nice and the melody is catching, specially the one from season one. I also like the computer graphic contribution to the story, when it shows the interior of the human body reaction to some disease or treatment. That’s great!
But still, one thing almost left my mind, but I have to say it: Lots of times there´s too much of a “formula” to the episode. Just like Ally McBeal (what’s up with character’s names for tv series titles?), that had a musical ending to every single episode, Dr. House goes on also in this road. And speaking of liking to make a point using other people experiences has an example; in Ally McBeal the character John Case did much the same. And so, I’ve just remember another good tv series that only belongs to the seasons it was made: Ally McBeal. Very uninteresting now, but very good to watch back in its days, with a great computer graphic contribution to Ally dreams and illusions. And that it! MacGyver, Ally McBeal, and Dr. House. One had the skills, the other the craziness and the third has it all!
But still, I believe that, just like MacGyver or McBeal watched today, so will tv fans in the future will laugh about Dr. House.
